Two new NIH grants were recently awarded involving Milk Bioactives group at FFHI.   The first is a $2.7M grant from the National Cancer Institute is led by Yu-Jui Yvonne Wan, a professor and vice chair for research in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and also involves Dr. Mills and Dr. Carolyn Slupsky (FST).  The second grant is for $4.2M from the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine is led by Dr. Mills and the FFHI Milk Bioactives Group (Drs.

Congrats to Mills lab alumni, Nick Bokulich, who was recently awarded the John Kinsella Thesis award, the highest award of distinction for PhD students in the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences.   Congratulations Nick!!

Nick Bokulich has been awarded the 2013 Samuel Adams Scholarship from The American Society of Brewing Chemists.  Congrats Nick!

Recent Mills laboratory alumni (and new Pontifical Catholic U of Chile assistant professor) Daniel Garrido received the Pan American Nutrition and Food Science award from Grupo Bimbo for his thesis on human nutrition "A molecular basis for the enrichment of bifidobacteria in the infant gastrointestinal tract".

Dr. Mills was part of a successful proposal to the UC Davis competition entitled Research Investment in Sciences and Engineering (RISE).

Nick Bokulich has been awarded an American Society for Brewing Chemist award for the 2012-2013 school year. This particular award was contributed by the Brian Williams Scholarship fund.   Congrats Nick!

Dr. Mills and Foods for Health Institute colleagues Carlito Lebrilla and Bruce German are partners in a large $8.3M grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation entitled "Breast Milk, Gut Microbiome and Immunity Project".

At the recent Northern California Institute of Food Technology meeting Nick Bokulich was awarded the Bernie S. and Alta Schweigert Award.  Congratulations Nick!

Dr. Helen Raybould and Dr. Mills have recently been awarded an NIH R21 grant for a two year study entitled "Activation of Host-Probiotic Communication by Prebiotic Milk Oligosaccharides".  This work is funded through the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine.  Congratulations all!

Congratulations to Daniel Garrido, a PhD candidate in the Food Science Graduate Group.   Daniel is one of four 2011 recipients of a National Milk Producers Federation Scholarship.   Way to go Daniel!
