Acetobacter aceti genome to be sequenced by JGI
Acetobacter aceti
Recently JGI has approved a proposal by Dr. Mills to sequence the genome of Acetobacter aceti. A. aceti is commonly associated with spoilage of alcoholic fermentations and/or alcoholic products in which the conversion of ethanol to acetic acid destroys the product. The genome sequence of A. aceti will greatly facilitate a basic understanding of the metabolic potential and microbial diversity of this species—a key member of the Acetobacteraceae. Genome sequence will also inform control strategies for abating contamination as well as provide a more comprehensive understanding of ethanol and acid tolerance in bacteria in comparison to the other sequenced Acetobacteraceae.
